The e-commerce industry will generate more than 7,600 tons of plastic to sell for 1 billion USD, while food delivery generates nearly 18,600 tons of plastic The above information is stated in the Proposal to develop the Law on E-commerce (EC) of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The Ministry of Industry and Trade will have regulations to limit plastic waste when shopping online The drafting agency believes that the E-commerce Law needs to have regulations on the construction and development of E-commerce. Currently, the regulations in Decree 52 and Decree 85 have provided basic legal frameworks for the operation and operation models of E-commerce. However, in the context of strong e-commerce development, current regulations need to be adjusted towards sustainable e-commerce development to maintain long-term development. The results of the investigation and survey of the Vietnam E-commerce Association (VECOM) announced in 2024 showed that the rapid development of the Vietnamese e-commerce industry has led to many environmental problems, especially waste from packaging, order fulfillment and online food delivery. If there is no effective solution to reduce plastic waste, it is predicted that by 2030, when the e-commerce market size reaches 100 billion USD, the amount of plastic waste from this sector could reach 800,000 tons. Over the past year, the online shopping and food delivery markets in Vietnam have reached a size of 22 billion USD and 1 billion USD respectively, emitting about 160,000 cardboard boxes and 171,000 tons of plastic, mainly disposable plastic, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The e-commerce industry alone emitted more than 7,600 tons of plastic to sell 1 billion USD, while food delivery emitted nearly 18,600 tons of plastic. The above facts show that e-commerce is facing a significant increase in waste from packaging and transportation, putting great pressure on the environment. Along with that, green standards and sustainable development responsibilities are becoming common requirements in global e-commerce activities, requiring businesses to integrate emission reduction solutions, use environmentally friendly materials and build green supply chains. Therefore, the development of e-commerce policies in the coming period needs to emphasize the development of environmentally friendly e-commerce infrastructure, encourage businesses to apply green technology and increase consumer awareness of sustainable consumption. These steps not only help protect the environment but also enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese e-commerce, contributing to creating a sustainable digital economy. Accordingly, the Ministry of Industry and Trade believes that it is necessary to supplement and perfect the policy on green and sustainable e-commerce development; Create favorable conditions for the application of e-commerce in operations. The State needs to allocate resources from the central to local levels to participate in promoting sustainable e-commerce development. Along with that, businesses need to invest more in technology and innovate business processes to meet new standards, especially green e-commerce. For people, product prices may increase due to the cost of applying environmental standards and improving infrastructure.
